What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimisation Explained for Business Owners

Google now answers questions directly in search results — without users clicking through to websites. AEO is how you make sure your business is the one providing those answers.

You've probably noticed it yourself: you type a question into Google and the answer appears right at the top of the page — no clicking required. That box is called a featured snippet, and it's the result of Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO).

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so that search engines — and increasingly, AI assistants — select it as the definitive answer to a specific question. It's distinct from traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking pages. AEO focuses on winning the answer.

Why does this matter for your business? Because featured snippets get significantly more clicks than the first organic result. If someone asks 'how much does a website cost in South Africa' and your answer appears in the featured snippet, you've effectively jumped to position zero.

The key to winning featured snippets is formatting. Google tends to pull answers from content that directly addresses a question, uses clear headings, and structures information in lists, tables, or concise paragraphs. Think of it as writing for a reader who wants the answer in 40–60 words.

AEO also feeds directly into voice search. When someone asks Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa a question, the answer they hear is almost always pulled from a featured snippet. As voice search grows, AEO becomes increasingly important for local businesses.

At Gro3th, we build AEO into every content strategy we create. That means identifying the questions your customers are actually asking, structuring content to answer them directly, and using schema markup to signal to Google exactly what type of content you're providing.
